Deep Water – American Authors
Welcome to the new website redesign and official launch of the NuMu site! I know I’ve been MIA for a bit but I hey, nobody is paying me to write this. Completely for your enjoyment! Now you’re probably thinking “I thought this was an article about Deep Water by American Authors? What is this guy rambling on about?” Yes, you are right! American Authors have released an amazing single that will propel them into the next phase of their music career.
Growing Pains
American Authors came out with some quality music, but Best Day of My Life cast what I like to call a “Hit Shadow”. It was overplayed and chewed by the music industry to glean every penny from it (Portugal the man is drowning in a Hit Shadow right now. Their live performances are hindered by the listeners only knowing one song and then it makes the band contemplate trying to create songs that sound just like their hit. All of sudden they go from being on top of the world to treading in deep water trying to stay afloat as each song they release just can’t seem to get the traction they desire. What do you mean, they’ve had a bunch of hits and they are doing amazing!? Yes, but in my opinion, they haven’t reached a point of depth. A band with depth is the Killers or the Lumineers after their most recent album (they were also in a Hit Shadow from Ho Hey). This song shows they can reach out into different territories I am pleased to say American Authors have leaped out of the deep water that was surrounding them with their most recent single.
The Lyrics of Deep Water
The content of the song is pretty simple, yet it sends a distinct message of drowning, of internal anguish (listen to it on a long drive about 11:30 pm. You will get all the feels and know what I am talking about as your voice cracks screaming the lyrics). There is a definitive change of tone from their other songs. Deep water provides something real. I can’t help but feel this song has such a strong message because Zac Barnett truly relates to his own lyrics.
Internal Struggle
As a musician, the internal struggle of performance and constantly being judged puts continued pressure on a band and its members. This song has such strength because the emotion behind it is real. When listening to Deep Water by American Authors we receive a view from the deep recesses of a performer’s mind.
